Setting Up PPP with Windows 95

Point to Point Protocol (PPP)

PPP stands for "Point to Point Protocol." It is a method of providing a direct connection to the Internet over a telephone line with a modem. In fact, when you are using a PPP connection, your computer becomes a node on the Internet. With PPP, your computer can make use of the Internet just as a computer connected to the campus ethernet does, only at a slower speed.

The effectiveness of interactive sessions will be directly related to the speed of your modem. If you use a modem only to check your e-mail and read newsgroups, you do not need PPP; in fact, PPP would just make things work more slowly. A better choice for these activities is Hyperterminal (a program which comes with your Windows 95 computer).

PPP enables you to do the following over a dial-up connection:

Note: You need to have SYSADMIN set up an account for you in order to use PPP.

Setting Up PPP with Windows 95

Note: Have your original Windows 95 CD or disks handy before you add software because the computer may ask you to insert the disks.

  1. Modem Setup

Make sure your modem is set up and working properly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.

  2. Dial-Up Networking

Double-click the "My Computer" icon. If you see a folder named "Dial-Up Networking," go to step 3.

If you do not have a "Dial-Up Networking" folder, you will need to install "Dial-Up Networking":

    1. Double-click the Control Panel folder and click "Add/Remove Programs." (Or, you can access the Control Panel under "Settings" in the "Start" menu.)

    2. Click the "Windows Setup" tab.

    3. Click "Communications."

    4. Click "Details"; then, click the small box next to "Dial-Up Networking." A checkmark should appear in the box.

    5. Click "OK."

    6. Click "OK" again.

    7. Restart your computer after the installation is complete.

    8. Check the "My Computer" screen; you should now see a "Dial-Up Networking" folder.

  3. Dial-Up Adapter

Double-click the "My Computer" icon. Double-click the Control Panel folder and double-click the Network icon. If you see a network adapter named "Dial-Up Adapter," go to step 4.

If you do not have a "Dial-Up Adapter," you will need to add it:

    1. Click "Add."

    2. In the "Select Network Component Type" box, click "Adapter."

    3. Click "Add."

You will see a screen like the following:

    4. Under "Manufacturers," select "Microsoft."

    5. Click "OK."

The "Network" window will show the "Dial-Up Adapter" and a list of protocols as in the following screen:

  4. TCP/IP protocol

    1. In the "Network" window, click "Add."

    2. In the "Select Network Component Type" box, click "Protocol."

    3. Click "Add."

You will see a "Select Network Protocol" box like the one below:

    4. Under "Manufacturers," select "Microsoft."

    7. The "Network" window will show the "Dial-Up Adapter" and a list of protocols. You must have one "TCP/IP" protocol assigned to a dial-up adapter. (Note: If you have a network card installed, you should also keep a "TCP/IP" protocol assigned to the network adapter.)

    8. Delete all other protocols by highlighting and clicking "Remove." Delete "NetBEUI," "IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol," and any additional "TCP/IP" instances. Be sure only "Dial-Up Adapter" and one "TCP/IP" remain (unless you also have a network card installed--see section G above.)

    9. Highlight the "TCP/IP" protocol and click "Properties."

    10. Select "Specify an IP address" as in the following screen, and replace the "000" with the address you have received from SYSADMIN (your IP address should be of the form 128.175.51.SomeNumber, and the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0)

    11. Click on the "Gateway" tab. In the "New Gateway" box, type 128.175.51.1 as below:

    12. Click "Add."

Note: Be sure to click "Add" before you click "OK." Otherwise, what you type will be ignored.

    13. Click the "DNS Configuration" tab. You will see a screen like the following:

      Fill in the following information:

Hostname: Obtained from SYSADMIN Domain: asel.udel.edu
      DNS Server Search Order:
      128.175.13.92 Click "Add."

    14. Click "OK."

    15. Click "OK" again. You may be asked to insert your Windows 95 CD or disks.

    16. At "Do you want to restart your computer now?," click "yes."

  5. Setting Up your connection

    1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon, and double-click "Dial-Up Networking." The "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" window comes up. Click "Next."

    2. If the "Make a New Connection" Window doesn't come up automatically, click on "Make a New Connection."

      1. Type a name for the connection (e.g., University of Delaware).

      2. Click the Configure button under the name of your modem.

      3. Click the "Options" tab.

      4. Select "Bring up terminal window after dialing." Your screen should look like the one below:

      5. Click "OK."

      6. Click "Next."

      7. In the box, type a phone number from the following table:

Dialing from Modem Speed Number to dial
        Newark 14,400 831-6435 or 831-3220
        28,800 831-0100

Nothing more will happen until you choose a program like telnet to connect to Axe to use e-mail or a news reader. One of the buttons on the "Connected to U of D" window is a "Disconnect" button. Be sure to click it to disconnect after you are done working. If you don't disconnect, your telephone line will still be connected to the University, and you won't receive any incoming phone calls.
