ASEL The Innovator is published by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Rehabilitation Robotics, one of the projects of the Applied Science and Engineering Laboratories at the duPont Hospital for Children and the University of Delaware. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education, National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), Grant #H133E30013, and the Nemours Foundation.

The Innovator is a nationally distributed newsletter on consumers with disabilities participating in research and product development and the newsletter of the Consumer Innovation Laboratory (ConLab) project. The newsletter is designed to serve as a source of ideas and information about involving consumers with product design, especially design of assistive devices.

About Our Laboratory:

RERC The Consumer Innovation Lab (ConLab) is one of many projects of the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Rehabilitation Robotics, a project of the Applied Science & Engineering Laboratories, duPont Hospital for Children, and the University of Delaware.

The ConLab is an effort to incorporate people with various physical or sensory disabilities -- consumers -- into rehabilitation technology design projects.

Consumers work as peers with staff engineers in the development of rehabilitation technology, and the benefits are threefold. First, consumer involvement ensures that the design and function of rehabilitation technology meets the REAL needs of REAL people. Second, the engineering staff is provided with firsthand experience with the needs of people with disabilities. Third, the consumers themselves gain a better understanding of the product design process.
