TITLE: TRANSPARENTLY-MOTIVATED METAPHOR GENERATION (A PH.D. PROPOSAL) AUTHOR: Mark A. Jones ABSTRACT: This introduces the phenomenon of transparently-motivated metaphor. It makes a case for its prevalence and reports analysis of some textual goals that such metaphor can achieve. General principles that can explain many uses of such metaphor are discussed. This analysis of metaphors and the resulting principles have led to a methodology for generating transparently-motivated metaphors from general principles. This methodology allows for an account of the conceptual structures behind such expressions, an account of effects of the metaphors, and the potential for some novel metaphor generation. The issue is approached from the introduction of metaphor generation component. Several details about this component are described, including the forms of the input and output, and how selection rules will be represented, selected, and used.
